Celebrating Madras! A 380-year-old Legacy

“Chennai is a word, Madras is an emotion”.
Chennai is one of the unique cities which builds a relationship with your Heart!
You should ask a “Chennaivaasi” a person who lives in Chennai, he / she will definitely share their bonding with “Madras”.
The year was 1639; the date 22 August. The East India Company bought a piece of land from the Nayak rulers on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal.
The story began with a fortress (Fort St. George); from settlements emerged villages and towns, and in a matter of time, a city was a born—Madras, or Chennai as we know it today.
Speaking of today, it’s the city’s 380th birthday, and be it food or fashion, Chennai has given us enough to be grateful for.
In 2004, three city residents—historian S Muthiah, journalist Sashi Nair and publisher Vincent D’ Souza—realised that this vibrant city deserved its own unique celebration.
They called it Madras Day, a day that commemorates the past and present of the city through heritage walks, talks, quiz contests, photo exhibitions and more.
And while the revelry is on, here’s a black and white, coming of age-scrapbook of the city.
Happy Birthday, Chennai!
