The release of more than 100, lifetime prisoners are delayed for the 2019 general elections.
The state government decided to release 1,800 life imprisoners in prisons across Tamil Nadu, on the occasion of the centenary of the late former Chief Minister MGR.
Under Section 161 of the Constitution of India, the order was issued by the Governor of the State by the guidance of the Supreme Court and the State High Courts.
Following this, the state government sent 1,775 prisoners who were imprisoned for over 10 years and sent to the Governor for approval.
So far 1,457 prisoners have been released. Since the Lok Sabha elections are taking place.
it is said that the govt. has not sent any recommendation to the remaining prisoners to be released.
The prison department says that about 100 prisoner files are not sent to the governor’s office for various reasons.
The files are said to be the worst massacre in Melavalavu, Madurai district in 1997,
the culprits involved in some sensational cases including the killing of six Dalits.
With the end of the MGR century, the prisoners’ relatives say that there are no signs of the release of more than 100 prisoners.
