Mind Blowing Facts About Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple

Meenakshi Amman Temple is located on the banks of Vaigai, with great historical Significance.

It is the Centre of Attraction in the city of Madurai.

Goddess Meenakshi is the Main Deity of the Temple.

The Temple signifies the importance of Women in Families.

The temple is believed to be close to 3000 years old!

It is a splendid mix of Legends, Myth and Brilliant architectural techniques.

Ancient Mythology states that, Lord Shiva came in the form of Sundareshwarar to Meenakshi, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati.

Their Wedding is said to be the biggest wedding on Earth, where millions of people, Gods and Goddess coming down to Madurai to bless them and witness their heavenly wedding!

Their wedding is celebrated for 12 days annually in the Tamil month of “Chithirai”(Mid April), which is also called as the Grand Chithirai Festival.

The Event starts from Flag Hoisting, Meenakshi’s Coronation, Her Wedding and the “Ther Thiruvizha”, the procession of Meenakshi – Sundareshwarar in the Temple Car.

Literatures of Tamil Sangam has special mentions of the Goddess in 6th Century Texts.

Thirugnanasamandhar, a Hindu saint, mentions the temple as early as 7th Century.

In Tamil classics, it is mentioned that the city is “Lotus” shaped.

The Temple is in the centre and all surrounding streets are in the shape of petals!

The Entire structure, when viewed from above represents a Mandala.

A Mandala is a structure built according to the Vedic laws and Symmetry.

The Temple offers a splendid display of 14 Gopurams (Towers), that range in height from 45 to 52 meters.

Each Tower displays Thousands of Mythological Sculptures and Stories.

The Oldest Gopuram the One in the East, it was built by Maravarman Sundara Pandiyan between 1216 -1238.

The Southern Gopuram is 52 metres tall and was renovated in the 16th Century.

There are around 33,000 sculptures in the Temple.

A Massive ‘Natraja’ statue is embedded in huge silver Altar.

The Tower over the Sanctuary of Meenakshi – Sundareshwarar is gold plated.

The 16th Century Thousand Pillar Mandapam(Hall) has 985 uniquely carved Pillars.

The Two shrines occupy the remaining 15 Pillars.

These Pillars surprisingly produce different musical notes when tapped.

The Golden Lotus Pond inside the Temple is a Holy site.

It is believed to bestow success on those who enter the Pond.

The Temple spreads over 14 acres, full of Art, Architecture and valuable History!
